Ontario Works rates - frozen at $733 since 2018 while ODSP is indexed every July: demand for a $150 increase and annual indexation

Hello,

I am a recipient of Ontario Works in Ottawa, and I write about the rate, not about my file.

A single recipient of Ontario Works is allowed $343 a month for basic needs and up to $390 a month for shelter, being $733. That amount was set in 2018 and it has not moved since, while prices have. Restoring the purchasing power of the 2018 rate now takes about $183 a month. I ask this Ministry for $150, which is less than what inflation has already taken.

Your Ministry indexes the Ontario Disability Support Program every July, and did so again in July 2026. Your Ministry does not index Ontario Works at all. One ministry, one treasury, 2 programs, and only one of them is protected from inflation. I require the reason in writing, and I require it to name the decision, the date it was made and the official who made it.

I require this Ministry to raise Ontario Works allowances by $150 a month for every recipient, and to index them annually on the same basis and on the same date as the Ontario Disability Support Program.

I have asked the Ministry, under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, for the records behind the decision to index one program and freeze the other. I am also putting this to my member of Provincial Parliament as a petition to the Legislative Assembly under Standing Order 42. Your answer, or your silence, goes with it.

Respectfully,

Danilo Dzyuban
